The fall season means it’s time to clean the clutter.
5 Tips for Decluttering Before a Move
1) Always Pack Important Items First
Be sure to pack your most beloved items first and then you will have these ready to go to your new home. Packing your most important items first means it is easier to figure out the rest of your belongings and if they are worthy of being packed or not.
2) Envision Your New Home
Do you want all the junk that you have accumulated over the years to be in your new home? Through envisioning just how you want this home to be, you are going to find it easier to let go of some of the things that you have been piling into your current home.
3) Declutter from Room to Room
When you go from room to room packing the important items first and then removing the clutter, you start to see progress. Be honest with yourself about that item and ask if you’ll really use it and why you are keeping it. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in the past year you can most likely move it to a better place.
4) Have a Maybe Box
A maybe box is for the items where you can’t decide whether to keep, donate, or throw away. It’s okay to keep this around during your process and sort over the time you have to move. Getting closer to the move date will help you make a final decision.
5) Donate or Give Away
If you have a lot of items that are clutter to you, be sure you aren’t just throwing these into the garbage. Give the items away to friends and family who need them or donate to organizations such as Amvets, the Salvation Army and Goodwill.
We hope these tips help with your decluttering process. Remember the more time you put into decluttering now, the happier you’ll be when you move into your new home. Please call us if we can be of service.
